The GAELIC Strategic Plan

Well the GAELIC Summer Camp 2010 has come and gone and we had a really good time with lots of networking and discovery of new ideas or different ways to do thing. Read all about it and access the presentations here.

Once again thanks to all who participated by presenting or attending this event and thanks again to the National Library of South Africa (Pretoria Campus) for the use of their facilities.

Denise Rosemary Nicholson, (Copyright Services Librarian at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg) was voted the LIASA Gauteng South Branch Librarian of the Year and then LIASA LIBRARIAN OF THE YEAR.  Well done Denise

*Elsabe Olivier (UP) has been elected as the South African representative on the Board of Directors of the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD).

*Rebecca Senyolo, Librarian at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg for being awarded the first Ellen Tise Leadership Grant by LIASA. This new grant is named after the IFLA president, 2009/11 and recognizes active involvement in LIASA on any level.  Read more>>>>> thanks to Chatter Box

Well done Belinda Boucher (Electronic Content Librarian) of Tshwane University of          Technology for being appointed to assist the Academy of Science of South Africa                    with   their investigation into the electronic information needs of academic staff,                     students and    researchers. The results of this study will inform the Department of                      Science and     Technology   (DST) of relevant databases which may be considered for special licensing  support. Read more >>>>>

Nelson Mandela papers published

The William Cullen Library which houses the historical papers and manuscripts at the    University of the Witwatersrand announced that the Nelson Mandela Papers had been  published. Michele Pickover, GAELIC’s Objective 3 Operational Manager and curator of this  section, says the papers were originally given by Nelson Mandela to Geoff Budlender. The  collection consist of nine documents (including some original notes written by Mandela)  that have been digitised and are available for download from the Historical Papers research  website.  Read more >>> or access the Rivonia Trial Collection

Kay Raseroka gave her final presentation to the GAELIC group on the 24th May with a presentation entitled “Kay looks back”    The slides from this will be on the GAELIC web shortly. GAELIC presented her with a platter to remember us by.

Congratulations go to Kay Raseroka, the Library Director of a GAELIC member institution, the University of Botswana who is to receive honorary degree from the University of Alberta. Read more >>>
Kay served as the first African president of IFLA. She founded Botswana’s Children’s Information Trust, and she has devoted more than 35 years to promoting the importance of oral learning in indigenous communities.

The University of South Africa’s (Unisa) Department of Information Science hosted an alumni    lunch in Pretoria on Thursday 25 March 2010 to honour the Department’s Alumnus of the Year     for 2009 – Mrs Denise Nicholson, Wits Copyright Services Librarian, who obtained her      HDipLIS at Unisa and a BA with two WIPO/UNISA Copyright modules.

Congratulations to the staff of the GAELIC Libraries who were selected to attend the 2nd Carnegie Library Leadership Academy (CLLA). David Mahlangu (UP: Merensky Library), Khomotso Maphopha (UniLim), Annah Matodzi (UniVen),  Tebogo Mogakane (UP: Merensky Library), Mercy Mokgele (Unisa: Polokwane),  Jacob Mothutsi (UP:  Mamelodi Branch Library), Nkisheng Mphahlele (TUT) Violet Nemalili (UniVen), and Suzy Nyakale (UP:  Medical Library).  Well done to all!
